Big pot for roads
10:52am Monday 7th October 2013 in Letters
Paul Hepworth uses defective logic regarding road tax (Letters, October 3). It is true this tax is is no longer ring-fenced for road maintenance and the vast majority of it goes into the Chancellor’s coffers.
But this is the same “big pot” that is used by central government to provide the bulk of funding to local authorites; and hence when local authorities spend on local roads, much of that finance has, in fact, come from motorists.
Mr Hepworth wrongly states that road maintenance is paid out of council tax but that is only a part of the council’s income – and moreover is also not ring-fenced for road repairs.
