A common sentiment concerning the upcoming teachers’ strike is that the strikers are selfish for taking action to defend their pensions. “Why do they deserve a good pension when I won’t get one?”, is a question I have heard more than once.
This thinking is backwards and belittles the thinker, instead of asking whether the teachers deserve a good pension, should we not all be asking ourselves: “Don’t we all deserve a good pension?”.
I know that, despite sacrificing a significant portion of my income to my company pension plan, I will not be comfortable in retirement.
It gives me no pleasure to know that another group will see their entitlement reduced and I fully support the teachers in their action.
