Flag’s all right, Jack
I enjoyed the letter by Nick Blitz in The Press on Tuesday, September 24.
Like many people, I worry about what happens to UK services and costs if Scotland chooses to abandon the union, but I hadn’t thought about the choices the Scots will have to make about legislation.
However, I am writing because I don’t believe we need to change the Union Jack by removing the Saltire. The UK flag should remain the same to reflect the past United Kingdom member countries and their past history and continuing links with countries and former colonies across the world.
To also reflect the fact that many people and families in England, Wales and Northern Ireland have an ancestral link with Scotland.
Not changing the flag will also remove the cost of changing every flipping flag (or flag image) on every building, notice, label, document, passport, website etc. both at home and around the world.
Finally, in a democracy, Englishmen would vote in their own English Assembly, to decide the response of the English to the proposed change to the UK (fat chance).
I’ll say it again, Houses of Parliament MPs should represent only English constituencies and the House of Lords should be made up of representatives from all members of the UK to vote on UK issues. Then we’d have someone to speak for us.
