City’s councillors need to ‘get real’
I WONDER what your readers thought of the front page photo of the Civic Party processing over Lendal Bridge to the official opening of the new council offices (The Press, September 21).
My first reaction was of the “laugh out loud” variety. What a motley collection, some in flowing gowns, some in silly hats, one in a pashmina and another carrying her shopping bag.
However, on reading the footnote of the full story on Page 5, my mirth turned to anger as I read that because of this, some temporary road closures ensued and First York reported delays of about 25 minutes to their services.
What a disgrace! Why couldn’t the party have walked on the footpaths, like the rest of us – or better yet, have gone by car?
But hang on a minute, that would have meant a right turn out of Lendal after leaving the Guildhall, pass the public library, turn left into St Leonard’s Place, proceed down Bootham, and Clfiton, over Clifton Bridge, left into Leeman Road, and a sharp right turn at the traffic lights at the foot of Lendal Bridge, finally arriving at Station Rise.
Get real councillors, that is what we are all having to put up with every day.
Elizabeth Harris, Kirkwell, Bishopthorpe, York.
• THE reason the council closed Lendal Bridge was explained today (The Press, September 20). They needed to walk across it unimpeded.
Could not our councillors walk on the pavement like the rest of the York residents?
Of course not.
They closed not only Lendal Bridge but also other roads so they could process, as they feel is their right, down the middle of York’s roads.
This is what we are paying for and what all the Labour voters voted for.
Rita Crombleholme, Badger Hill, York.
