Sign Richard III petition

First published in Letters by

I RECENTLY signed the petition calling for Richard III to be re-interred at York Minster and would encourage others to do the same.

Richard had a deep connection to York and Yorkshire. He was the last monarch of the House of York, grew up at Middleham Castle, and as president of the Council of the North controlled the region from Sheriff Hutton Castle.

He visited York several times as king and his son, Edward, was made Prince of Wales at Archbishop’s Palace.

As well as Richard’s connection to York, it is worth noting York’s connection with Richard.

The city championed him during his short reign, lavishly celebrated his visits, sent troops to support his fight against Henry Tudor, and mourned his death in battle. Historians say he was well-regarded in York and his work to promote legal fairness and economic development was not forgotten.

Indeed, the popularity of the ‘Richard III Museum’ and the success of this year’s ‘Rumour and Reality’ festival show the enduring connection that exists between Richard III and York. A connection that should now see his remains brought to this city.

The petition can be found at: epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/38772
