WHAT a shame that York has withdrawn from Britain in Bloom (It’s such a blooming shame, The Press, August 28).
Many people have put many hours into their floral displays in the city and this year has seen blooms and displays of particular excellence. The council flower towers and baskets are superb and business and hospitality premises have done us proud. Even the horse trough in Lawrence Street is full of flowers and looking beautiful. For Coun Sonja Crisp to have pulled the plug on this is an insult to all who have been concerned in making our city an attractive and colourful place.
York is not alone in facing cuts. Coun Crisp should have the confidence to promote our city when it really deserves to be at the top.
The money has already been spent by many private individuals, as well as the city council and although not wasted, will not receive the accolade it deserves.
Some 20 years ago I was a judge for York in Bloom and I must say that the city’s displays have improved year by year and this year has surpassed itself.
So well done citizens of York, be they council gardeners, businesses or private individuals and shame on City of York Council.
June Wood, East Parade, York.
