Commons vote in line with public
THE House of Commons decision against UK armed intervention in yet another Middle East conflict reflects the public opinion, which members of York Against the War hear consistently week after week at the Saturday stall.
There seems to be a clear consensus between York citizens and visitors that expressions of moral outrage by UK Government ministers backed by military force bring no real relief to the suffering civilian populations in the countries concerned, and increase the risk of pseudo-military revenge terrorism here in this country.
I believe that the Government should actively promote in the Middle East the diplomatic success of European nations in creating the EU, a regional institution that for 70 years has seen an end to centuries of sectarian and nation-state warfare throughout our region.
We should encourage Middle Eastern nation states to establish a similar regional body, in which they can work and legislate together to improve social welfare and human rights for all their citizens, and agree common laws that facilitate free trade and free movement of labour.
The deep-seated tribal hatreds of the Middle East are not different from those which have been successfully removed from decision-making power in Europe.
Maurice Vassie, Forge Lane, Deighton, York.
• ON THE first anniversary of the bizarre ‘Red Line’ speech, the USA decides that it is time to justify all-out war and advance their Imperialist/Zionist agendas, it is one more step toward the isolation and eventual obliteration of Iran.
The idiotic debates in the news media fail to address the fact that Assad had nothing to gain from using chemical weapons, having almost defeated the rebellion and knowing that the US, Israel and all their lackeys were eager for an excuse to join in.
Almost certainly this poisoning was committed by those who desired intervention – the rebels (who, miraculously, were unharmed by it).
The use of chemical weapons is not new. The USA drowned Vietnam in Agent Orange and Napalm, poisoned Iraq and Afghanistan with thousands of tons of depleted uranium and supplied Saddam Hussein with chemical weapons to poison Kurds and Iranians.
Horrendous birth deformities are endemic at the sites of these US war crimes.

• SINCE we are telling other countries to get rid of their chemical, biological, nuclear and weapons of mass destruction, how about us getting rid of our own?
How about also closing Lakenheath, and Brize Norton which houses the B52s, and Porton Down and Aldermaston?
How about getting rid of nuclear subs, landmines, napalm, depleted uranium shells, cluster bombs and all the other evil things.
Let us work with all countries to produce a better world and bring an end to war itself.
Robert Greaves, Alder Way, New Earswick, York.
