Buses are unreliable
In reply to Coun Dave Merrett’s letter of August 20, he should bear in mind that not every one has a bike, and not every one is fit to ride one or walk long distances.
As for getting people on to public transport, if we had a reliable service more people would be encouraged to use one.
In The Holly Bank area, if the No 16 service is running late the drivers take it upon themselves to miss out The Loop altogether and go directly down Hamilton Drive, leaving passengers on The Loop with a two-hourly service.
There is no way one can be sure of keeping any appointment one has in town or at the hospital.

• WITH regard to Sue Nelson’s column of August 19, I moved to York ten years ago.
I thought it would be a nice idea to attend a Christmas concert at the Minster. Since the Park&Ride buses had begun to run until midnight and I live on the outskirts of York, it seemed a good plan.
I am not surprised that this service was subsequently stopped at night.
The concert was lovely and I walked to Rougier Street to catch the bus back, a little after 9pm.
I was appalled at the sights as I stood there. Young people were running around half-clad, shouting and falling about in the road, the worse for drink.
I felt very vulnerable. Like Sue, I have never ventured into the city centre at night since, although there are theatre performances and other events I would like to attend.
It is high time the council took measures to eradicate this antisocial behaviour from our streets.
