Who is driving?
HAVING already been treated to the York University health sciences smoking and mental health patients report, yet another expensive undertaking is now under way.
This project goes by the coy name of Casper and promises insights into the collaborative care of elderly people said to be suffering from mild depression. Rather more depressing, perhaps, is that these cosmetic NHS-funded projects appear to be viewed by York Mental Health Services as at least as important as the day-to-day care and treatment of mentally ill people in York. So much so, it has taken years of pressure and agitation to provide a place of safety so individuals no longer need to lack lifesaving specialist help.
So how much more NHS money is to be diverted away from the frontline mental health care in York in order to enhance the academic reputations of its perpetrators? A glance at the health services departmental staff list reveals a cast reminiscent of an early production of Ben Hur. Such ongoing cost and for what?
Makes you wonder what sorts of people are driving the mental health chariot in York.
