Question of answers
THIS week and next, York students will receive exam results.
These represent the culmination of years of learning and hard work. Although the tests they took have been hard, they at least had answers.
Farcically, City of York Council is about to embark on a test when it doesn’t know the question it is asking, let alone how the answer will be judged.
I refer to the proposed test closure of Lendal Bridge. The aim is to cut congestion but, despite repeated requests, I have not been advised of any success or failure criteria.
There may be some thrown out at the last minute, but this will not change the fact the cabinet voted for something where they had no idea what they were trying to achieve.
Full council was not allowed a vote after Labour councillors blocked a vote on a petition.
On the ludicrously simplistic aim to cut congestion, although we don’t know where, or by how much, I do believe the trial will succeed.
However, this is for one sad reason – that Labour’s policies will yet again drive people away from York.
I feel many more households will be celebrating their children’s achievements than those of the Labour council.
