FURTHER to your article about the increase to the charges for the council’s warden call service (The Press, August 13), I would like to make customers, their relatives and carers aware of the support available.
We recognise these are difficult times. This is why charges have only increased by 35p in seven years. However, the service is costing significantly more than the charges cover and most customers who responded to our consultation recognised that the situation cannot continue.
We are offering to carry out a financial assessment for anyone who feels they are unable to continue with the service as a result of the new charges.
This will highlight whether they are eligible for new or additional benefits. We are also working with customers, offering alternative solutions to ensure they retain some level of service rather than have their equipment removed.
The new charges will not affect the majority of customers who receive the warden call or telecare service as part of a wider care package to which they contribute all or part of the total cost.
Anyone who any concerns about the new charges should phone the warden call team on 01904 645000.
Graham Terry, Assistant director, adult commissioning, modernisation and provision, City of York Council, West Offices, York.
