IT is apt that, during the week of York Open Bowls Tournament, the following is noted.
City of York Council is about to levy a £2,000 per green charge on all council greens.
Although we have some excellent young bowlers, the majority are senior citizens.
The myth is that seniors are well off. The fact is, only 14 per cent are.
Clubs are already folding and competition will reduce.
Among seniors, less activity leads to immobility, with the accompanying isolation.
I earnestly ask Coun James Alexander, the council leader, to encourage bowls as he previously vowed.
Please reconsider your levy imposition.
James Campbell, President, York Amateur Bowling Association, Grassholme, Woodthorpe, York.
