THE PRESS of June 1 included a report on a scheme to demolish the Burnholme Club and redevelop the site as housing.
The report rightly stated that though the building has some architectural and historic merit, it is not a listed building or in a conservation area.
It has, however, been nominated for the draft Local Heritage List because of its association with the York architect, Walter Penty, and his patron, John Bellerby.
The principle of adopting a Local Heritage List for York will be included as part of the Local Plan consultation and the York Open Planning Forum will hold an open meeting on July 2 at 7pm at the CVS Priory Street Centre.
If the Local List is adopted for planning purposes, an item included on will become a ‘material consideration’ when affected by a planning application.
It is not the role of the forum to campaign on behalf of items included on the list. The purpose of this letter is to alert anyone in the Tang Hall and Heworth area who thinks that Burnholme makes a valuable contribution to the character of the area to comment on the planning application and say so.
