Foxes following instinct

FOXES do seem to get closer to our properties and I was told one was seen jumping into my garden recently.

I have only ever seen one in a zoo and have no real wish to get any closer, fascinating though it would probably be; but better safe than sorry.

However, I did not know whether to laugh or cry on reading that foxes kill and dismember chickens.

Now this may not be for the faint-hearted, but humans do so daily, mercilessly killing and dismembering them by their millions and billions the world over, nicely displaying the dismembered bits as thighs/wings/breasts etc.

It is not the foxes’ fault people choose to keep chickens as pets.

There is only one cruel animal in this world – the human animal – and we have no excuses as we are responsible for our actions.

Foxes can only follow their instinct, and don't have the luxury of choice in this matter.

Oh, by the way, I have had the pleasure of meeting some truly wonderful humans, too.

What I was trying to say in my letter was that the fox population is not being kept under control anymore, so people who keep chickens have more to worry about. There was an article the other day about a woman that has rescued ex-bats; she gives them freedom for the first time, they have not been able to move about previously, unable to move or feel the sun/fresh air. The thought of them being attacked just as they are having their first taste of freedom is quite disturbing.

What makes you think that the 'fox population is not being kept under control anymore'?

We have rescued ex bats and the thought 'of them being attacked just as they are having their first taste of freedom', is far less disturbing to me, than the thought that humans were willing to keep them in battery cages all their lives. Then slaughter them for cheap pie fillings as soon as their egg production dropped off :(

I'm not certain Foxes are moving closer to humans, rather that humans are moving closer to the animal Kingdom.
Just look at green belt development, the grab for land to build ever more houses to accommodate ever more people to get these small islands up to 70 million people. Think of all that additional Council tax generated to be wasted on silly projects while fixing the roads and emptying the bins + providing rubbish tips appear low priority.
Far too many people and too many out of touch Councillors in York.
