Building for the future

As National Careers Week draws to a close and with National Apprenticeship Week on the horizon, this is a perfect time for people in York to think about their careers and aspirations.

For school leavers or career changers considering their next steps, the construction industry offers an array of exciting career and training opportunities with employers who are keen to attract high-quality ambitious people to the sector. However, a widespread misconception of the industry means these opportunities are often overlooked.

Despite encountering tough times, we forecast that Yorkshire & the Humber will need to have an annual recruitment requirement of 1,910 new construction workers over the next five years.

We want to attract new blood into the industry, and hope that people in York take advantage of this time to investigate construction employment and courses near them.

Steve Housden, Sector strategy manager, CITB-ConstructionSkills.

Writing a letter to The Press probably won't do much... a better use of resources would be to write to the government urging them to subsidise people who employ people as apprentices/trainees (depending on age) in construction industries - as currently things such as liability insurance and buying tools all comes out of the employers' pocket, and if the employer is just a bloke on hos own with a van then he cannot afford that and so no apprentice/trainee. It could be run as a special scheme so those who have been on Jobseekers for more than 1 year (or are on the Work Programme, for example) are encouraged into a skilled trade such as this, and those who employ such people and train them up to a certified level (ie, for electricians this would be 17th Edition + Part P) would get financial bonuses for doing so, which would either equal or be greater than the expenditure in training up the jobless person.
