Council’s in credit

GIVE credit where credit’s due, Selby District Council deserves all the plaudits going at the moment.

Not only does Selby have a listening Conservative MP in Nigel Adams, it also has a listening Conservative-run council led by Coun Mark Crane.

Not only have they managed to get a few quid in the tank, they have passed their thrift on to many of their cash-strapped residents (me included) by not raising council tax for the third year running. It would be interesting to know how many councils in the country can boast that; certainly not our near neighbours, City of York Council. So hats off lads and lasses, three cheers for SDC. Soon-to-retire chief executive Martin Connor can be proud of the legacy he will leave behind.

Ken Holmes, Cliffe Common, Selby, York.

Well done SDC for holding council tax again but I live in the Selby Council area and certainly wish I paid the same amount as York residents. Even with the rises in York my total payment is almost 10% more than an equivalent property in the City of York Council area.

Agree that Martin Connor deserves all the praise going, but can't go with the rest of Mr. Holmes' platitudes.
Why?
For starters...

Farce of move from old Civic Centre

Planning department that's a joke

Bringing in charges for green bin collection.

Saying they want to bring people into Selby - and harm that by grossly increasing car park charges.

Break their own rules on traveller site provision.

So just like most local authorities, a curate's egg.
