IT SEEMS a little insensitive and impolite to open a medieval ‘gluttony’ market in one of Great Britain’s important Christian cities just before Lent, which begins today, on Ash Wednesday.

It should have closed on Shrove Tuesday if York people (whether atheist, agnostic or anything else) still had an atom of respect for tradition and history. What will overseas visitors make of it?

I do not think that it would have been held in the medieval times that this market is supposed to be celebrating. Perhaps York has given up good manners and respect for Lent?
