Such rotten timing

IT SEEMS a little insensitive and impolite to open a medieval ‘gluttony’ market in one of Great Britain’s important Christian cities just before Lent, which begins today, on Ash Wednesday.

It should have closed on Shrove Tuesday if York people (whether atheist, agnostic or anything else) still had an atom of respect for tradition and history. What will overseas visitors make of it?

I do not think that it would have been held in the medieval times that this market is supposed to be celebrating. Perhaps York has given up good manners and respect for Lent?

It's not important to non-Christians (the majority).

What is a Christian city as opposed to say an atheistic one or of another faith. Strange title

Go and elect a pope for christ's sake.

Who says it's a Christian City? I deeply object to this label. It would never have occurred to me that a market had anything to do with Lent. I'm sure most people wouldn't even have given it a thought. Why should we have to pander to the minorities all the time with their weird ideas? If it's so offensive just don't go into town.
