Magnificent advert for this city of ours
9:49am Friday 1st February 2013 in Letters By Readers' letters
I was astonished to read such negative comments about the new council West Offices (Letters, January 30). My visit to them was the highlight for me of the recent York Residents’ Weekend.
In my view, this is the finest and most imaginative refurbishing of a major building in York for the past 50 years. The original, 1840s listed building has been lovingly revealed and restored; the central atrium is an exhilarating space and the elegant curved roof thrown over the whole structure is a triumph of modern technology.
It will be a magnificent advert for all visitors to York of how to live in the 21st century in an historic city – and also be an enviable place to work for the 1,400 staff who are to be relocated under its roof.
Roll on the March opening and shame on the doubters!
Peter Miller, St Oswald’s Road, Fulford, York.
• I’VE BEEN fascinated by the recent correspondence about naming the new council offices and have a suggestion of my own. Following the fashion for daft names such as ‘Explore’ for a library and ‘Energise’ for a swimming pool, may I suggest ‘Extort’ for the new council offices.

What the majority of visitors do see as an 'advert' for York is the giant lit up pink sign visible on the main bridge, caught up in so many photos.
I'm sure we all know the one? It pretty much says, "Welcome to Coulters" Did our city get renamed without telling us?

£1.4m's worth of tables, plus nearly 3,000 chairs.
Harrison's - a top class developer - skilled at delivering innovative, value for money, design solutions.
COYC - good at spending tax-payers money on office furniture ? !!!!
