TV show is ‘degrading’
11:44am Thursday 31st January 2013 in Letters By Reader's letter
THE letter from D Hudson of January 23 brought forth the expected bevy of replies supporting Mrs Brown’s Boys.
Of course, one can turn off a TV programme, which is what I did on its first showing.
There will be a large following for this ribald type of humour, there always has been. However, I am sure I am not the only one to find the continual use of foul language in all forms of “entertainment” and everyday life degrading and unfortunately one can’t always turn it off.
Just because only two of us have written in to The Press expressing our concern about the standard of TV productions, etc, does not mean there are not others who do not feel the same, and I don’t mean only Christians.
This is only part of our culture which is being eroded by lowered standards, sorry, non-existent standards.
Newspapers, TV and radio inform us of terrible things happening every day in this country, and in the main it is due to falling standards and lack of principles.
R Theakston, Greenshaw Drive, Haxby, York.

If our influences all came from the TV, then I am sure I would, by now, feeling all saintly and Christian like, as Songs of praise and other similiar types of programme have been on our TV's longer than I can remember. I do know though, to turn it off. The references they make, whilst dont offend me, or influence my being, personality, or lifestyle, just does not fit with me.
Neither have I adopted a Cockney accent, or dropped the 'th' out of my speech from Watching years of Eastenders. I fink, sorry Think, I can make up my own mind for what is right, wrong, and acceptable in these days.
Likewise, my personal standards do exist, and have never been lowered.
Just because I, and countless millions like the comedy and yes, the colourful language, does not make us lesser mortals than you. So, if you would like to move along your moral high ground to make room, 'One' would appreciate it.
Finally, is one really suggesting that the decline in standards and principles is the fault of the Media? You really need to see someone. Many of todays 'terrible things' as you describe them, are entirely the fault of the strong 'Principled' who wont give an inch, and not a man dressed as a woman, making millions laugh.
An example, is the right to bear arms in America, and as written in them Good Old days I think you may be wishing still existed. As for many more examples of the 'Principled', I will leave religion out of it for now.
