Scotland’s answer

IN SCOTLAND, where the road lane is narrowed by a central reservation, an area alongside the reservation and extending before and after it is marked on the road surface. This is accompanied by a notice stating that vehicles are not allowed in this area when it is already occupied by a cyclist.

Like many other sensible ideas, this does not seem to have penetrated south of the border.

Does it also state that cycles are not allowed in the area if a vehicle is there?

In Scotland, cyclists stop when a red light is displayed to road traffic at a pedestrian crossing. Like many other sensible ideas, this does not seem to have penetrated south of the border.

Scotland seems to take a much more pragmatic approach to road and traffic matters. No unworkable uncalmed 20 mph on wide main roads, 20mph when lights flash is the norm outside schools, so does not apply at 2 am on Sunday in the middle of August. Also 'countdown' markers to a reduced speed limit, instead of our practice of putting the limit so far out in the fields that everyone ignores it and is still doing 50 in the middle of a village.

Penetration was the catalyst for Braveheart, right? Not sure our cyclists would do well to paint themselves blue and bare their arses. We get enough of that from Stag do's 'penetrating' our historic city.
