Population pressures

WITH regard to recent letters about immigration, I do not care what someone looks like or what they believe in. Provided they do not force their beliefs on others they are welcome.

I also believe that leaving the EU completely would be catastrophic for our country. Immigration is not a matter of race but of practicality.

The UK population is set to hit 80 million in the next few years. For those with a poor grasp of geography, the UK is an island. We are recognised already as being overcrowded.

We are in a double recession, we do not have enough decent employment, we cannot provide enough housing, without imports we cannot feed ourselves, our infrastructure is reaching breaking point, as is our education system, and our health service is beginning to collapse.

The examples of Bulgaria and Romania, like Poland and the Baltic states previously, are examples of foolish EU policy. In allowing countries with poor economies to join with unrestricted access to wealthier states, then uncontrolled immigration is inevitable.

Our circumstances within the EU should allow exemptions, the constant population increase is not sustainable and the quality of life will continue to decline.

Charlie Stone, Southolme Drive, York.

Sign me up too Charlie. I have no confidence in any UK polititians of any persuasion regarding any aspects of immigration control. An appreciation of their lies and failings built up over many years, but the final straw was the Blair Government's pathetic estimate that no more than 15,000 would move to the UK from the first group of accession states, (including Poland, Hungary, Latvia and Lithuania). In fact over 750,000 came within 2 years!
So please bear in mind that all Government figures are:
a) inherently suspect for all kinds of reasons.
b) Make no allowance for illegal immigration in all its forms. Believe me, this is a far bigger number than 750,000!
b)

Irrespective of this incorrect future population prediction, the fact remains that Labour's open door policy resulted in a net increase of was it 3m ? This is unsustainable, and has most definately resulted in a reduction of living standards in the UK, at the expense of those who were born here, worked here and contributed tax and NHI. It's time that the UK closed it's doors to immigrants who haven't got the skills we require and who will be a drain on our resources. It just isn't fair on the rest of us.

'I do not care what someone looks like or what they believe in. Provided they do not force their beliefs on others they are welcome.'

Here here.

'I also believe that leaving the EU completely would be catastrophic for our country.'

Here here again.

'The UK population is set to hit 80 million in the next few years.'

Rubbish. Net imigration from the e.u over the last ten years is less than 700 thousand. (Census 2011) and even if we continue to age as we are it will be 50 years before we get anywhere near the 80 million.

For those with a poor grasp of geography, the UK is an island.

Indeed as is Hong Kong. In terms of square miles Hong Kong's population is more than 25 times that of the UK.

'Our health service is beginning to collapse.'

Not yet but the biggest threat to the NHS comes from the Condem's plans for back door privatisation.

Near 80 Million in 50 years? A Major disaster and a General disgrace by our so called politicians to allow this to happen.
This couldn't happen in Iceland.

ok so 70 million or 80 million , fact of the matter is, this country is full up!
And we dont have the houses, jobs or the money to let in another wave of immigrants from Romania or Bulgaria, York is practically gridlock most of the time, what we need now is politicians to take the common sense approach and adopt tougher border controls, York alone as a 4000+ waiting list for council house i'm led to believe. Time to sort out our problems before we sort out the rest of the E.U.'s .....

Open your eyes, and see what uncontrolled, excessive immigration over the last ten years, has done to the UK !

Pressure on housing, roads, schools, hospitals, prisons and welfare - all to levels that are ruining the country !

Indeed, we are a multitude of islands, joined by a tunnel to the Continent.
