The expenses gap

YOU report (The Press, January 8) that the average worker in Yorkshire and Humberside spends £2,535 per year on expenses relating to his or her job.

Nothing could demonstrate better the gap between average workers and those who represent them.

The total amount of expenses claimed (for doing their jobs) by our MPs in 2011 was £70 million paid for by us. Nice “work” if you can get it.

Does City of York Council still pay 65 pence per mile for staff using their own cars? On my last tax return I could only claim 45p per mile, ie I stump up 36 p per business mile and HMRC kindly gives me back ninepence at 20% tax rate.
