Bus loss concern
10:00am Monday 14th January 2013 in Letters By Reader's letter
RESIDENTS in Fulford have lost Coastliner’s Number 20 service, which previously operated between Acomb and Fulford. The route is now shortened to stop at Heslington Hall.
Buses will no longer serve the Heslington Lane and Broadway area. This means there will be no bus service between Fulford and the new York Sport Village.
It also means residents lose their bus service to Sainsbury’s and Asda at Monks Cross and Tesco at Clifton Moor. I know that there have been some route and punctuality problems with the Number 20.
However, cutting the service is a blow for local people in Fulford.
I have heard fears that it will push some residents into using their cars, while others will be forced to stop using their chosen supermarket or the new sports village.
I made representations to council officers in November and I will continue to closely monitor the situation and the impact it has on local residents, while carrying on my calls for improved local transport links in Fulford.
Coun Keith Aspden, Liberal Democrat councillor for Fulford.

If it was First there would be an outcry on here, you know, the usual profits before passengers blah blah blah! as it is Transdev it is okay it was underused anyway. Standardsx2!

Plus if the service had been extended to the designer outlet it would have been used by people on fulford road who simply didn't want to be ripped off by the P&R fares.

I would happily pay the higher fare for the regular headway, oh by the way in the bus industry we use the term headway, not frequency,
There were calls for the route instead to be extended to form a 'centrelink' type service connecting Clifton Moor, Monks Cross, the University, and the Designer Outlet all together, and with the time to get from fulford to the designer outlet it'd only have required one extra vehicle and there'd have been enough timetable padding to counteract late running. Seeing the 44 now has 3 additional buses on the route then having another on the 20 wouldn't have caused much trouble.... The main problem is the frequency of the service - yes Transdev took a subsidised service and is now running it without any subsidy thus reducing burden on the council, but perhaps a 6 month trial into running a service every 30 minutes between the University and Clifton Moor could be in order? A more regular calling pattern results in more people using the service simply because it fits in more with their lifestyle (I've said this too about First services like the 12 to monks cross) - and it's obviously working on the 44. We've seen Transpennine trains increase in frequency and now pretty much every train is full and standing which means it has gained popularity; Stagecoach took a flailing bus service from Chesterfield to Sheffield and over a period of a year or two increased the frequency from one bus every 120 minutes to one every 30 minutes and now the double deckers they use are always full up... if you run a service where people want to go and as often as people want it to go then the people will come, it's just a case of tapping into supressed demand.

I have never heard anything about the need for this "centrelink" rubbish.
