I AM totally behind the idea that one should not drink and drive.

I am careful not to exceed the alcohol limit when I am driving throughout the year and extra careful over the Christmas period when I know that there will be an increased danger of being breathalysed.

Your article (Penalty Outrage, January 2) tells of the police arresting 109 motorists since December 1 for drink/drug driving.

Those found guilty should face the penalty.

My concern, however, is that officers conducted 3,412 breath tests to find these 109 law-breakers – that is only around three per cent of the people being stopped, so 97 per cent of drivers were under the limit or had not been drinking.

If 3,412 people have been breathalysed, how many more had been stopped and not been asked to take the test?

Once again, a minority of law-breakers are making things difficult for the police and the rest of the community.
