Just plain loco

YOU report on December 7 that “An historic train has come home to Yorkshire...”, that it is a “...sister train to record-breaker Mallard” and that “The train is currently being restored...”

I would point out that the A4 Class locomotive Dwight D Eisenhower is NOT a train, it is a locomotive. The two terms are not interchangeable.

A train is what a locomotive hauls, which even had to be pointed out to the BBC PM programme last Friday. Please try to get them right.

The NRM has a useful display about the Flying Scotsman. This helpfully explains the difference between the train ie the 10am Kings Cross to Edinburgh & vice versa, plus the locomotive of that name which sometimes might pull the Flying Scotsman train.......

Good point Mr B, and to shep's lad:I don't think pedant should be a term of abuse. Journalists of all people should be careful in their choice of words, it's a crucial part of their job.
