HOW I agree with Mr Fillingham’s opinion as to the low sentence given to the man who allowed torture and suffering to Anna, the elephant, while under his so-called care ably with hard labour, if such a thing still exists in our ever-lenient society, would certainly be warranted (Letters, December 6).
I can never understand why dreadful acts towards animals are always treated so lightly – if anything, people who inflict suffering on animals, who have no defence, should be given longer sentences. It is a pity that physical pain is no longer inflicted on vile creatures such as this one, but to consign him to prison, where he can enjoy every comfort and can consider which of his “human rights” have been infringed, for a pathetic period, can in no way fit the bill.
Yes, Mr Fillingham, people who make it their business to weed out perpetrators of cruelty to animals are to be praised and encouraged. I wish there were more of them.
