Church concerns

I READ Archbishop Sentamu’s article on poverty with interest and (mostly) agreement (The Press, November 27).

However, my hackles rose at the Church’s position on the housing shortage. If the Church is so concerned, why doesn’t it solve the problem? It would be easy to use some of the massive amount of land it owns (including in York), and the cost of substantial house building a drop in the ocean compared to an investment portfolio in excess of £5 billion.

The archbishop seems a genuine philanthropist even though he represents, in my view a hypocritical Church of England, and let us not forget that Dr Sentamu earns £55,000 and lives in a palace.

The CofE talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk.
They could contribute to the shortfall in the NHS budgets if they were to pay the salaries of the Chaplains in our hospitals - £48m which I would rather was spent on nurses and doctors is spent on their salaries annually.
(I wonder how many of those who see chaplains in hospitals know they are paid from the hospitals budgets)

Not just church of England, chaplains from other Christian denominations and other faiths are paid by the NHS
