LIKE Janet Kitchen-Cooper, I deplore the growing poverty in this country (Letters, November 24).

But anyone who believes that money saved by the Government’s axing overseas aid would be diverted and spent instead on relieving poverty and deprivation here is deluding themselves.

As taxpayers we have no opportunity or right to choose how our taxes are spent. It is the Government that decides.

No economic decisions taken since the financial crisis can lead us to believe that it intends to use public funds to help the unemployed and the low-paid. In fact by destroying public-sector jobs it has created deprivation.

We won’t give anyone an easier life here by withdrawing help given to the poor overseas.
