A RECENT family wedding took me to Australia, where I spent a day at the races at Rosehill on the outskirts if Sydney.

Admission was 20 dollars, but only five dollars for us oldies and nine races took place. At the August Ebor meeting, admission was £27, reduced to £24 for oldies, for a card of six races. An Australian dollar equates to 65p.

Perhaps the York races committee should consider whether value for money is being given by them. With average wages in Australia being about 50 per cent higher than here, the difference in cost of a day’s sport in real terms is staggering.
