YORK’S buildings and parks are lucky to have some superb ironwork. Sadly much of this is slowly disappearing. It is true that some of it has been replaced by cheaper inferior modern equivalents, but the older iron in places such as the hospital is allowed to decay. There seems to be no strategy by either the private or public sector to preserve it.
Recently the De Grey Rooms was revamped. This looks superb and shows what can be done with a bit of care and attention.
It is a credit to one of York’s most successful Victorian industries. But if we are not careful, York will become the same as everywhere else.
