I REALLY must disagree with your Women’s Page of October 30 which apparently hates the old practice of trick or treat. What is wrong with small children going round, with or without their parents, knocking on doors and carrying out this age-old ceremony?

We always stock up with bags of chocolate bars but hardly anyone comes round these days, which I think is very sad. We really looked forward to those little faces at the door and always are happy to supply small treats.

Luckily, my husband and I are both chocoholics and so none of the chocolate bought is wasted, but that is not the point. I deplore the modern mistrust that puts a stop to children being children and enjoying these once-popular demonstrations of innocent fun.

Children knocking on doors by themselves.

Step into the real world Heather.

What is wrong with small children going round ...

Inn many areas it's young thugs armed with eggs and flower demanding money with menaces. Legally it's called extortion, and a bad example of how to behave for any child no matter how young.

Far from an age old ceremony, it's an American bad habit of relatively recent import into the UK.

Not a good idea for children of any age to be going around the streets on their own in darkness. Another daft American idea which we have sadly adopted but which apparently is dying out; good. This is nothing but a nuisance; particularly to elderly people who do not want to be answering the door in dark evenings. This practice has been used too often in the past as an excuse for bad behaviour and should be discouraged. Get a life Heather.

-knock knock-

-pause-

-door creaks open-

"TRICK OR TREE-EAT!"

"Oh you crazy kids look at you, what smashing costumes you have! Crivens for a minute I thought I had the real Bela Lugosi on my doorstep!"

-confused children-

"Um... trick or..."

"Oh yes of course, you want chocolate. Yes, here you go we have plenty... there you are young man, and you lad, and you little fella, and there's yours my boy, NOT YOU you careless strumpet!!"

Kid knocks on Heathers door dressed as a Witch.
Heather exclaims "Exodus 22:18 Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."
Screams ensue.
Good luck in court Heather 8-)

Trick or treating is sadly one of those American customs and is not an age-old tradition in this country.
It was barley practiced this side of the pond before the 90's.

Not a good idea. A few years ago a chinese woman threw boiling water into the face of one child. For me that alone is enough to say keep the kids away from strangers doors. The effects could be permanent!

Age-old ceremony? It certainly didn't exist when I was a child. And chucking eggs at the windows of elderly people ain't my idea of "innocent fun".
