Utter despair
9:40am Wednesday 31st October 2012 in Letters
LORD TEBBIT rightly talks about “This dog of a Government” – but sadly it goes much further than that. I have never been more frustrated, angry and in such utter despair about my country than now. There has never been less real democracy. It appears that there is no-one we can trust.
It is impossible for us all to be in it because we are not one nation, but a massive collection of ‘‘differences’’ – politicians through lies and the expenses scandal, bankers through fraud and irresponsible casino dealing, journalists through phone hacking, prisons through the large re-offending numbers, teachers through absconding with under-age children, the police through Hillsborough, the church through child sexual abuse, TV celebrities and icons through child abuse, major institutions such as the BBC and NHS through the likes of Jimmy Savile.
Then we have professional footballers cheating, diving and receiving obscene salaries, leading sports riddled with drugs, senior businesses avoiding tax – all this has made trust impossible.
Many of our best youngsters are out of work or being sent to die in Afghanistan in an unwinnable war.
Can anyone see light at the end of the tunnel? I cannot.
David Quarrie, Lynden Way, Holgate, York.

You missed out "idle pensioners regurgitating endless pages of one-dimensional end-of-the-world-sty
le letters whining to the local paper in the most tedious of fashions".

All these high profile one-offs like Savile and like the absconding maths teacher are just high profile one-offs.
Lance Armstrong cheated so we must forego all that respect we had for our medal winning olympians?
Savile had white hair and liked cigars, does that mean I shouldn't trust my grandad?
I can't trust the nice nurses who helped me last month because of the Savile story?
Base your ideology on media sensationalism and hysteria and you're bound to be a little nihilistic.
Maybe DQ should move to his beloved Germany where all his "German friends" are, life might be more rosy there?
