Call that smart?

WONDERFUL, after all the fuss about parking at and around the university: where are they building the new chemistry research centre? On a car park. These are the intelligentsia, are they not?

Can't see why not, there's nowhere else to put it.

Don't need to worry about parking, there's loads of back roads around there to use.

Science has a bad name these days so nothing surprises me. That said, the City planners must have approved this like they did for building on the Barbican car park. I expect there will be an army of parking attendants round there slapping tickets on screens. No doubt all a part of the plan to get the money back wasted on that stupid duff wind turbine!

Science only has a bad name because a lot of scientists have sold out on their beliefs to get funding from the government.

Scientific advances can't be wished into being; someone's got to pay for them. I've heard more than a few researchers say they'll take on "sellout" projects - whether for the government, the military, the private sector - to cement their reputations for when they need funding for more esoteric projects. It's not pretty, but they do what the gotta do.

As for erecting a new building on a car park - it's been awhile since I've been up near the Heslington campus, but there never seemed to be a terrible dearth of available spaces, and as J-Dawg points out, there's a decent amount of parking in the surrounding area as well. No doubt an expansion of the campus to accomodate the new building would elicit an amount of moaning too.
