Council should find the money

I AM reluctant to advocate more council spending, as our leaders have no difficulty in squandering the levies we all put into the city’s coffers, but I feel the festive Christmas illuminations for the city centre must be totally funded by the council.

Hard-pressed retailers should not be asked to pay for an attraction that brings benefits for the whole city.

If our council stopped paying for expensive outside consultants to do the tasks they are supposed to do themselves, a glorious flourish of lights in the festive season could be enjoyed by all at no extra cost to the council. It can be done with a little more thought.

WHAT – no Christmas lights in Stonegate this year? Can we not get some cast-offs from Blackpool? Never mind – the only ones to suffer will be the shops themselves. After all, the only purpose the lights serve is to put us all into the ‘Christmassy’ spend, spend, spend mood. So think again, shopkeepers – your tills may stop ringing. Or should that be jingling?

A Merry Christmas to you all.
