Tories to blame...oh no they’re not
9:40am Tuesday 23rd October 2012 in Letters By Readers' letters
IN reply to Tom Mitchell’s letter (Growing Need, October 18), he commented on the Government needing to act quickly to grow our own food to avoid foreign imports saying in the 1960s we were self- sufficient.
Can he not see that we were self-sufficient with coal (there are still hundreds of years supply under our feet). We import trains that were made locally, ships, steel – the list is endless.
The thing Mr Mitchell cannot grasp is that it was his beloved Thatcher who decided we could do without these valuable assets and let the City and its stockbrokers and bankers shape the future of Britain. The results are plain to see, even to Mr Mitchell.
Some people should take off their Tory blinkers and look at the real world before putting pen to paper.
By the way, if the majority of food is produced on the land I fail to see building factories on that land would help the situation.
John Taylor, Crossways, Badger Hill, York.
• IN REPLY to Philip Roe (Letters, October 17), the Conservatives under David Cameron’s leadership has achieved a credible economic plan that is keeping interest rates low and preserving the UK’s AAA status.
The Government has frozen council tax for a second year running; under Labour council tax doubled. It has protected pensioners, cut tax, introduced a fairer benefits system and made the banks pay their fair share.
On school discipline, the Government is giving schools the power to search pupils without consent for any dangerous or banned items. The toughest-ever rules on immigration were introduced in July.
These are some of the promises achieved so far by the Conservative-led coalition government.
Terry Smith, Fourth Avenue, York.

Apparently the likes of G4s are now being invited to run services regarding the rehabilitation of criminals, following their 'success' over the Olympics!
As far as a credible economic plan goes, we await with expectation the promised boom in house extensions. Of course in a age of Austerity, what else would a credible government do but use our AAA triple rating to borrow £12 billion and give it away to dictators and countries who neither want our money or need it.
I am sure we could all well do without such 'achievements'.
