York so lucky to have orchestra
LUCKY, LUCKY York! To have such an excellent group of local musicians, able to cope with the complicated rhythms of Bernstein’s West Side Story, the lush melodies of John Barry’s Born Free, the power of Wagner’s Flying Dutchman, and the demands of Dick Blackford’s Fanfare For York, and also able to call upon the brilliance of soloists like Nicholas Wright and enduring charm of Lynne Dawson.
There will, no doubt, be a review elsewhere of last Saturday’s Barbican concert by York Guildhall Orchestra, but I continue to be amazed at the skilled ensemble playing of this marvellous collection of amateurs. Conductor Simon Wright has moulded a treasure of which York can be justifiably proud.
