IN addition to the trains on the North Eastern railway system which had already been stopped others would be withdrawn from Monday, March 1.

The curtailment of the services was, of course, on account of so many of the company’s employees having joined the colours, thus creating a heavy shortage of labour.

Travellers were advised to make themselves acquainted with the changes.

The company claimed that every effort had been made, by means of alterations in other trains, to lessen the difficulties of passengers where connections were concerned.

A number of local trains on the Newcastle and York line would be stopped, and other local routes would also be affected.

HOT dogs at Bridlington in the summer would be served without onions, because the smell might offend some visitors.

This was the condition imposed by Bridlington Town Council when they decided to hire a mobile hot dog machine for use on the South Cliff car park.

Alderman Frank Webb said he was surprised to see a machine was to be set up on the car park which was used by quite respectable people.

“I hope we shall not have the odour of hot dogs wafted about the promenade,” he added.

Alderman WS Cook said: “They sell hot dogs outside The Tavern at Lord’s, and Prince Philip has not yet resigned.” Alderman Owen Clapp said the smell was the best part of hot dogs.

Alderman Richard Harrison, chairman of the entertainments committee, said in reply: “We have stressed with the catering manager that the onions must be cut out because that is where the smell comes from.”

PAUL McCartney had received a two-minute standing ovation from a star-studded audience as he accepted the top honour the music business could bestow on him – a Lifetime Achievement Award.

McCartney, for three decades a pop singer, had been welcomed with reverence in a presentation speech by actress Meryl Streep at the Shrine Auditorium for the 32nd Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

McCartney told reporters after receiving his award there was a strong chance that he would link up again with former Beatles George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

He said they were working on a film about the Beatles called A Long and Winding Road.

“I hope we get together to do some music for this project, and I hope things can progress from there,” he said.

John Lennon, the fourth Beatle, had been assassinated outside his New York apartment in December, 1980.
