8:07am Friday 27th April 2012 in History articles
THERE is a chance to find out more about past Lord Mayors of York next month.
A guided tour will take place on Sunday, May 6, on the Lord Mayors buried in York Cemetery.
In the first of the spring/summer series of tours, the Lord Mayor’s walk will start at the Gatehouse at 2pm.
It will be led by local historians Hugh Murray and David Poole, who are authorities on the cemetery and its history.
The current Lord Mayor of York Coun David Horton and civic party will also be there.
Based on a selection from the 50 Lord Mayors buried in around the 24-acre site, the walk’s subjects will range from William Hearon, whose year of office, 1815 coincided with the Battle of Waterloo, to Charles Oliver, the 1953 incumbent.
Tickets are £2.50 for adults and £1 for children, which includes a cup of tea or coffee.
