Historic documents recording the proceedings of ecclesiastical courts of York from 1300 to 1858 have been made available online.
The York Cause papers detail arguments about church taxes on liquorice, roses and pigeon dung and rows over marriage, wills and inheritance.
The 14,000 documents also deal with cases involving reputation and defamation, and the regulation of the moral and professional conduct of the clergy, schoolmasters, physicians and nidwives.
The papers can be seen at hrionline.ac.uk/causepapers/
