Reader Robin Audaer (it is pronounced O'Dair) brought in some photographs from his final year at Carr Lane Junior School almost 60 years ago.

The year was 1956. Robin was a member of the school rugby team (his father, Cyril, played rugby league with York RI) and the swimming team.

He doesn't remember much about his schooldays at Carr, the 70-year-old admits - it was a long time ago. "But it was quite a nice school. I enjoyed being there, and they must have done a lot of things well. We all managed to emerge fully numerate and literate!"

One thing he has noticed about the photos is how thin everyone was. There were no overweight children in the 1950s. The war was still a recent memory. "Sweets were a real treat: not something you had every day!"

Sadly, Robin has lost touch with all his schoolmates. Not long after these photos were taken, his family moved from Poppleton Lane to Yeovil in Somerset where, having passed his 11-plus, Robin went to Yeovil grammar school.

He then came back briefly to York to live with his grandmother and went to Nunthorpe for a while: then, when the family relocated to Harrogate, he finished his schooling at Harrogate Grammar.

Now, after a career in which he rose to become 'head of technical' in the British Isles for tyre company Michelin, he is retired and living in Moreby, near Stillingfleet. But if any of his old schoolmates recognise themselves in the photos, he'd be happy to hear from them.

"Hopefully, there will be a few people still knocking about in the York area," he says. "If anybody wanted to go for a pint, that would be good."
