A MIXED bag of old photos of York today, dredged up from a particularly dusty corner of The Press archives.

For those of you who think it is high time York had a proper bus stop, our 1968 photo of Rougier Street might raise your blood pressure.

The photograph is described in the caption as "the possible site of a central bus station for York viewed from the top of the Yorkshire Insurance Co offices in Rougier Street."

Whatever your feelings about that, it is certainly a scene that looks very different today. The rest of the caption helps you get your bearings.

"To the right of the Pageant and County hotels is the former Bushells site in Tanner Row," it says.

"The property runs back to the unoccupied buildings with large windows linking up with the two Railway Street properties formerly occupied by De Little Fenwick's and Dick's."

A second photo of Rougier Street is dated even earlier: May 1962.

York Press:

It shows a terrace of houses being demolished to prepare the way, apparently, for development scheme planned by 'motor engineers' Leedhams (York) Ltd.

"The site will be used for extension of the showroom and service premises," the caption reads.

We particularly like the photo of a double decker bus looming through thick fog, its headlights casting a diffuse glare.

It was taken on December 27, 1962 - just a couple of days after Christmas.

The caption provides little information, sadly. "A bus crawls through York on a foggy night," it says. But there's nothing to indicate where exactly the picture was taken. Any ideas, anyone?

Other photos pictured above include:

• June 1961: workmen hoisting huge banners into position at Monk Bar to celebrate the wedding, at York Minster, of the Duke of Kent and Katherine Worsley.

• October 1970: workmen 'beautifying' York's Bar Walls where they overlook King's Manor

• Davygate, September 1969: Does anyone remember York City Tailors? Nothing to do with the football club, presumably?

• Betty café, a lovely interior view photographed in September 1988

• A spooky photo from November 1969, showing a scene from a dramatised version of A Christmas Carol that was staged at the Theatre Royal. Possibly a bit of camera trickery here?
