Reader Jeff Lund from The Groves got in touch about a photograph in Yesterday Once More on December 22, which showed a workman busy with a saw cutting across a road just inside the city walls in 1990.
The road was Lower Priory Street, Mr Lund informed us – and the the workman was laying a ‘traffic island’ to block the flow of traffic, and prevent the street being used as a short cut through-route.
Another reader – Peter Elliott from Wetherby Road – has also been doing his homework about the series of photographs we carried that day under the headline “City’s long and winding road”.
He wrote particularly about a photograph showing a tall crane at work on a section of bridge, which was captioned simply ‘;construction and maintenance work in 1978.’
“My theory on the location ... is the A64 Malton bypass at the Eden Camp interchange looking north east at the eastern most bridge,” he wrote.
“The date fits as the bypass was completed in December 1978. I remember this as I began working for Dowsett Engineering and Construction in summer 1978, who were the main contractors.
“I didn’t see the work in progress, but the tree in the back ground fits with one showing on google maps and the construction was taking place in a limestone area.
“I will be interested to see if you have any other theories put forward...”
Thanks to both Jeff and Peter for getting in touch.
