Haxby and Wigginton History Group is researching the names of men from both villages who served in the First World War.

Colin Carr, a member of the group said: “We are hoping to have a memorial plaque made with the names of local men, not only the ones that were killed in action, but also the men who returned. So far, our researchers have found 130 names, but more keep coming in.”

To make sure no one is missed off the list, the group is appealing for people to come forward with the names of any of their relatives who lived in Haxby or Wigginton before the First World War, and who served in the Army or Royal Navy.

Mr Carr said: “We are hoping to dedicate the plaque at Haxby Memorial Hall on August 2.
