PHOTOGRAPHS from York's 'east side' today, courtesy of the Tang Hall Local History Group.

The group's new website went live earlier this year - and it includes a gallery of old photos of the Tang Hall, Hull Road, Lawrence Street and Heworth areas of the city, from which our selection of photos today are drawn.

"Although we're called the Tang Hall local history group, we go from Hull Road up to mMalton Road, and all the areas in between!" explained secretary Jane Burrows.

The group was formed in 1999 following a meeting in Tang Hall library. The aim: to collect and record photos and memories of the east side of the city and make them available to everyone.

In 2006 the group published their first book, ‘East of York’ . They hope to bring another book out soon - and are always on the lookout for material. "So if you have photographs, documents or ephemera we would love to hear from you," said Jane. "Anything borrowed would be carefully copied and returned."

We've included the group's website - which includes contact details - at the end of this feature.

Meanwhile, we hope you enjoy these photos, which cover everything from a view of East Parade in Heworth in the early 1900s to builders at work on the 'new' Tang Hall estate in the 1920s. They provide a wonderful glimpse into the past of York's mysterious east side...
