MEMBERS of the Tang Hall Local History Group are researching the history of the Hungate, Walmgate and Fossgate areas of York for their next annual display at the St Aelred’s Community Centre in Tang Hall in October.
Many families who were relocated from Walmgate and Hungate during the slum clearances of the 1920s and 1930s ended up in Tang Hall, says Jane Burrows, the history group’s secretary.
“If your family came from any of these areas or if you remember any of these areas, we would love to hear from you,” she said.
Meanwhile, the group has has couple of mystery photos it would like to learn more about.
One shows a wedding group gathered outside what the group believes is Heworth Church. “We recognise the buildings, and from the clothes it looks like the 1920s or early 30s. But we don’t know who the people are, or anything more about it,” Jane said.
The second is a family photograph, showing what could be three generations of the same family (possibly grandmother, mother and son). Dating again by the clothing, it looks late Victorian or Edwardian.
The portrait was taken by the York photographer Lane Smith of Lendal. If you have memories or old photos of Walmgate, Hungate or Fossgate, or if you know anything about either of our two mystery photos, you can contact the Tang Hall Local History Group on 01904 345942 or email tanghallhistory@gmail.com
