People across the UK will be lighting bonfires and fireworks this week, to mark the anniversary of the failed Gunpowder Plot. But how much do you know about Guy Fawkes's story? Here's a brief lowdown....

1) Guy Fawkes was born in York in 1570 and baptised in St Michael le Belfrey Church. His entry in the baptismal registry can still be seen, and postcards showing the entry are sold in the church.

2) His parents lived in Stonegate and it is widely claimed he was born there.....

4) His great-grandfather William Harrington was Lord Mayor of York in 1536

5) Fawkes attended St Peter's School. Legend says the school never burns a guy on its bonfire, as "old boys are not burnt at St Peter's". The school did host York's fireworks in 2005, on the 400th anniversary of the plot.

6) Fawkes sold his estate in Clifton in 1591 and went to fight in the Eighty Years War in Spain

7) In 1603 he sought support for a Catholic rebellion in England, denouncing James I and Scotland.

8) Although he is the most famed of the Gunpowder plotters, he was far from the ringleader. He is seen as a relatively minor cog in the wheel but was the first man caught.

9) He gave the name John Johnson when he was captured, but after being interrogated and tortured he finally yielded his real name.

10) He was executed on January 31, 1606, and his body parts sent around the kingdom as a warning.

11) Today, Fawkes's name lives on in a pub in High Petergate - immediately opposite St Michael le Belfrey, where he was baptised 445 years ago.
