A PUB landlady is toasting a 17th century spirit with her pot tankards.

Stephanie Macklewain-Cross introduced the ceramic drinking pots to customers at The Black Swan on Peasholme Green.

Toasting to Honest John, a local man who was hanged for stealing despite protesting his innocence, is now common in the pub. Myth has it John never died and was able to climb out of his grave.

York Ghost Walker, Mark Graham, suggested the toast to Honest John after researching that a choking sensation can be felt around the neck if a toast is not made.
