SCENES from the 17th Century unfolded in York this week, as the production of a short film took place at historic locations around the city.

Possession is the latest short film from York filmmaker Karen Wilson, who has been working closely with organisations and businesses across the city for months to bring the production to life.

She said: “Local support has been absolutely fantastic, once again establishing York as a great place to make films.”We've worked with Barley Hall, the Yorkshire Farming Museum, the Merchant Adventurers Hall, York Museums Trust, York Conservation Trust, York Archaeological Trust and the Minster Stoneyard who have all helped immeasurably to bring the world of York in 1665 to life.”

The film tells the story of a young girl who is boarded up in a plague house with her dead family, even though she does not have the disease.

One dramatic scene, filmed at the Merchant Adventurers Hall, featured several extras from Judi Dench's old theatre group the York Settlement Community Players.

Wearing period costumes and waving flaming torches, the mob cheered as the lead character was boarded into her home.

Sections of the film will also take place in modern times as the girl's ghost finds a way to reclaim her life.

Amy Stables is a Film and Television Production student from St John University who is volunteering on the film, and said it had been a great experience.

“Karen asked if I'd like to come down and help out, and I've been here for the three-day shoot,” said Amy, 21.

“We've all worked really hard, but for me it's a really valuable experience, working with a professional cast and crew. I've learned a lot watching the director and assistant directors which I couldn't gain anywhere else.”
