YORKSHIRE'S claim to be the UFO capital of Britain will be reinforced by this strange photograph.

It was taken by Evening Press lensman Anthony Chappel-Ross. He was photographing Denton Hall, near Ilkley - that is the building seen at the bottom of the picture - and at the time noticed nothing strange.

Only when he downloaded the image on to his computer did he spot the three saucer-shaped objects, glowing orange in the sky.

In the next frame they had jumped upwards.

This was a job for Russ Kellett, North Yorkshire ufologist extraordinaire. From the Diary's description of the picture, he said the objects were unlikely to be conventional aircraft.

Ilkley has a history of close encounters. In 1987, an off duty policeman took a snapshot of a small green being with a large head and huge hands strolling around Ilkley Moor. Russ himself has taken a picture of a strange ball of light on the moor, above the cow and calf rocks.

He has been in demand of late. Last week Russ was on Sky News on and off throughout the day as they plundered his film archive of unexplained objects over North Yorkshire. And he also appeared in a Guardian article about the decline in UFO spotting.

It is anything but declining in his home town of Filey, named as a hotspot by the British UFO Study Group last year. Only in June, Russ saw an object fizzing about the seaside sky.

We have sent him Anthony's pictures and will report his expert assessment when we get it.

MORE incredibly useful consumer advice courtesy of Tesco now. Alec Dobinson of Acomb, York, spotted this on a pack of the supermarket's Class A eggs: "Allergy advice - contains egg". And Pauline Wallace bought Balti peanuts with the warning: "May contain traces of nut".

A CERTAIN Des Gruntled has written in to complain that our caption competition was a fix. "You asked, 'What did Mr York say to Miss York?' And then you go and give the cocktail set to a chap who won by telling us what Miss York allegedly said to the council leader!

"You will be hearing from my legal team and the Trading Standards Board in due course..."

Which leads us to the only poetic entry, penned by Geoff Wood of Tholthorpe, York:

A lucky young lad wearing glasses

Is cuddling one of our lasses,

Which made everyone talk

About lovely Miss York.

"Wow, what a wonderful chassis!"
